Do I Have Polybutylene Pipes?

If your water supply pipes are gray, flexible, and stamped “PB2110”, you have polybutylene. It was installed in homes built between roughly 1978 and the mid-1990s, and it fails from the inside out. Here is how to check in about five minutes.

The 30-second check

Go to your water heater and look at the pipes running into it. You are looking for three things at once:

  • Gray — occasionally blue or black, with a dull matte finish
  • Flexible — it bends by hand and is not rigid like copper or CPVC
  • Stamped “PB2110” — printed along the length of the pipe

All three together means polybutylene. The PB2110 stamp alone is conclusive.

Where to look in your home

You need exposed pipe. These are the six places it is usually visible without opening a wall:

At the water heater

The supply lines running in and out. Usually the easiest place to see bare pipe.

Under bathroom and kitchen sinks

Look at the supply risers behind the shutoff valves.

At the main shutoff valve

Often in the garage, a utility closet, or near the water meter.

Where pipes enter through a wall

Garages and laundry rooms frequently have unfinished penetrations.

In the attic or crawlspace

Runs are often exposed here — bring a flashlight.

Near the water meter, outdoors

Blue polybutylene was commonly used for underground service lines.

Check more than one spot. Partial repipes are common in South Florida. Copper under a sink does not mean the whole house is clear — original polybutylene may still run inside walls and ceilings.

Why this matters more in South Florida

Polybutylene was installed heavily across Palm Beach, Broward, and Martin County during the building boom that ran from the late 1970s through the mid-1990s. A large share of the region’s housing stock dates from exactly that window.

The insurance problem

Many Florida insurers decline to write new policies on homes with polybutylene supply lines, and some will not renew existing coverage. Carriers differ, so confirm your own position with your agent — but in a hard insurance market this is frequently the reason a homeowner discovers the pipe at all.

How it fails

Oxidants in treated municipal water degrade the pipe’s interior wall over years. Because the damage is on the inside, there is usually no warning stain or drip — the pipe holds until it does not. Fittings typically go first.

The Cox v. Shell settlement that once reimbursed replacement closed to new claims in 2009. Replacement today is a homeowner cost, though a documented repipe often improves both insurability and resale.

What does polybutylene pipe look like?

Polybutylene is usually gray, though blue and black were also manufactured. It has a dull matte finish, bends easily by hand, and is typically 1/2 inch, 3/4 inch, or 1 inch in diameter. The clearest identifier is the code PB2110 printed along the pipe.

What years was polybutylene used in homes?

Polybutylene was widely installed in US residential plumbing from roughly 1978 until the mid-1990s. If your South Florida home was built or repiped in that window, it is worth checking. Homes built after about 1996 are very unlikely to contain it.

How is polybutylene different from PEX?

Both are flexible plastic, which is why they get confused. PEX is usually red, blue, or white and is printed with the word PEX along with a standards code. Polybutylene is usually gray and printed PB2110. If the pipe says PEX, it is not polybutylene.

How is polybutylene different from CPVC?

CPVC is rigid and will not bend by hand. It is typically cream, tan, or off-white and joined with glued fittings. Polybutylene is flexible and joined with crimped fittings. If the pipe flexes, it is not CPVC.

Why is polybutylene a problem?
